Arlington sits between Dallas and Fort Worth, and its neighborhoods turn out a steady stream of garage sales, moving sales and estate sales most weekends. The city also makes sale-hunting easier than most: every garage sale needs a free city permit, and residents can put their sale on the City of Arlington's public garage sale map. Plans change, so check before you go.

Tips for sale hunting in Arlington
- Check the city map first. Because every Arlington garage sale needs a permit, the city's permit map is a handy way to see where sales are scheduled near you.
- Go early. Sales can open at 7 a.m. under city rules, and the best tools, furniture and kids' gear usually go in the first hour.
- Bring cash and a helper. Many garage sale hosts take cash or payment apps only, and estate-sale furniture usually needs two people and a truck or SUV.
- Park courteously. Don't block driveways, mailboxes or sidewalks, and follow any posted directions at estate sales.
Hosting a garage sale in Arlington? The city's rules
Here's what the City of Arlington's garage sale guidelines say as of Oct. 19, 2026. Read the full page and ordinance before you set dates.
- Permit: every garage or yard sale needs a city permit, and the permit is free. You apply online, the permit arrives by email, and you should keep that email until the sale is over. You can also list your sale for free on the city's garage sale map.
- How often: up to three garage sales per residence in a 12-month period, each lasting up to three consecutive days, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
- Apartments: individual units in multi-family complexes can't get a permit, but the property manager can get one for the whole complex.
- Signs: one ground sign at your home, up to 4 feet tall and 8 square feet. Off-site signs may go on private property with the owner's permission. No signs in medians, between the sidewalk and curb, within 10 feet of the curb, within 40 feet of an intersection, or on utility poles or fences. Take every sign down when the sale ends.
- What you can sell: a garage sale permit doesn't cover commercial sales, such as new items, more than two identical items or goods brought in from elsewhere to sell. Food that needs a vendor or food establishment permit isn't allowed (cottage food under Texas law is a separate matter).
- Display: keep items behind the sidewalk, about 15 feet from the street.
- Fines: the city says violations can bring a fine of up to $500 each.
