An estate sale is a whole-house sale, usually run over two or three days. Everything from furniture and kitchenware to tools, art and collectibles is priced and sold on site. Across Dallas-Fort Worth, estate sales happen nearly every weekend, from Preston Hollow and Lakewood to Plano, Frisco, Arlington and Fort Worth's west side. They follow downsizing, moves, divorces and the death of a family member. This guide brings together everything we've written on hiring a company, running your own sale and shopping sales, so you can find the right page fast.
Estate sale, garage sale or auction?
- Estate sale: most of the home's contents, priced and tagged, sold inside the house. Often run by a company for a commission. Texas has no state license for this kind of sale.
- Garage or yard sale: a few tables of extras in the driveway, usually one day and usually run by the household.
- Auction: items go to the highest bidder. In Texas, live, in-person auctions must be run by an auctioneer licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Internet-only auctions are exempt.
When a company runs your sale, Texas sales tax usually applies to what shoppers pay. Our guide to choosing a company explains who collects it.
