What church sales here look like
Recent church sales on our Dallas-Fort Worth map, so you know what to expect (these have ended):
A church rummage sale is usually stocked with donations from many households, so expect a wider mix of clothing, housewares, books, toys and furniture than at one family's yard sale. Bazaars and craft fairs are different: vendors or church groups sell handmade items, gifts and baked goods.
Tips for shopping a church sale
- Check the day and hours. A one-day Saturday sale can be picked over by late morning. Each listing on our map shows the hours.
- Bring cash in small bills and your own bags. Some sales take cards or payment apps; the listing usually says.
- Look for the fellowship hall or gym. Many church sales are indoors, with overflow in the parking lot, so they run rain or shine. Park where volunteers direct you.
- Ask about end-of-day deals. Some sales drop prices or offer a fill-a-bag price near closing. It varies by sale, so ask at checkout.
- Know where the money goes. Proceeds usually fund the church's ministries, youth trips or building fund, which is part of why prices tend to stay low.
Rules for church sales in Dallas-Fort Worth
Here's what we could confirm from official sources as of Oct. 27, 2026. This is general information, not tax or legal advice.
- City of Dallas: a permit is required. Every address in Dallas needs an approved garage sale permit before anything goes out, and churches and Dallas ISD schools can apply, online only. For a church or school sale, all items must be donated to that church or school and all proceeds must go to it. You'll need a driver's license or ID, a water bill, a valid email, and a letter on letterhead from the church giving the organizer permission, with the sale dates, times and the organizer's name. These permits can take 2 to 3 business days to approve, and the organizer has to show the approved permit to a code inspector. The permit doesn't cover community sales, food vending, car washes or flea-market style sales (Dallas Code Compliance). Dallas's garage sale sign rules also apply: one sign up to 2 square feet on the lot, up to five more off-site with the owner's permission, none in medians or on trees or light poles (Dallas Development Code 51A-4.217).
- Plano: the city's free garage/occasional sale permit is required for any advertised rummage sale, as well as yard and estate sales (City of Plano information sheet). Other cities set their own rules; our garage sale permit guide covers Fort Worth, Irving, Garland, McKinney and Frisco.
- Sales tax: two tax-free sale days a year. In Texas a nonprofit's exemption covers what it buys, not what it sells. But a religious organization with exempt status from the Comptroller, and each bona fide chapter, can hold two one-day tax-free sales or auctions each calendar year. A "day" is 24 consecutive hours, and the two can run back to back for up to 48 hours. Items priced over $5,000 are taxable unless the church made them or they were donated and aren't sold back to the donor. If two groups hold a sale together, it counts as one of each group's two. The church has to apply and receive exempt status before the sale day; outside those days it needs a sales tax permit to sell taxable items (Texas Comptroller, Nonprofit and Exempt Organizations; Tax Code 151.310).
- Food is simpler. Meals and food products, including candy and soft drinks, are nontaxable when sold by a church or at a church function, so the bake sale table at your rummage sale doesn't use up a tax-free day (Texas Comptroller).
How to host a church rummage sale
- Pick the date and check the rules first (see rules above): sales tax status, any city permit, and where signs can go. Avoid weekends with big community events nearby.
- Set a donation window with a cutoff date, and say clearly what you can't take (large appliances, mattresses or anything you can't move or resell).
- Sort and price before sale day. Group items by room or category and price everything ahead of time. Our garage sale pricing guide has typical prices for everyday items.
- Staff it in shifts. Set up, checkout, a cash box with small bills, someone on the floor and a cleanup crew. Two people at the money table at all times.
- Promote it three to four weeks out. Bulletin, announcements, members' social accounts and free local calendars. Our guide to promoting a church event walks through it step by step.
- Plan for leftovers. Line up a donation pickup or drop-off before sale day so nothing goes back into storage.
